Description

This detached house on a corner site was built in 1905 by CHB Quennell, with construction by GW Hart. The house is of red brick with rusticated brick quoins to the first-floor angles. It has tiled gabled roofs with dormers, tall brick chimney-stacks with modillion friezes, overhanging eaves with a painted timber bracketed soffit, and an asymmetrical design. The return to Bracknell Gardens is also noteworthy.

The house has two storeys and attics and originally had two windows, though the number has clearly changed with later alterations. The main facade features a projecting gabled bay with a canted bowed bay of seven transom and mullion lights, with small leaded panes extending through the ground and first floors; the eaves soffit continues around the first floor. The gable above this bay has cut and rubbed brick diaper enrichment and modillion eaves. The left-hand bay incorporates a subsidiary entrance with a part-glazed door, sidelights, and overlight, above which is a three-light transom and mullion window. A brick modillion band runs across the facade and return. The main entrance is in the angle of the right-hand return, leading to an unusual single-storey porch of four round-arched openings with impost bands, a modillion frieze, and penthouse roofs rising over steps to a panelled doorway that includes a round light with glazing bars. A double-gabled return to Bracknell Gardens has a canted bowed bay to the right-hand ground floor and transom and mullion windows above. Tall gables are swept on the outer angles with short returns of eaves soffit, and the apexes feature cut and rubbed brickwork enrichment.

The interior of the house was not inspected for listing purposes.
