Description
40 and 42 Ferncroft Avenue are a pair of semi-detached houses built in 1904 by architect CHB Quennell and constructed by GW Hart. They are made of red brick and feature tiled hipped and gabled roofs with tall brick chimney-stacks, dormers, and overhanging eaves that have painted timber soffits. The design is asymmetrical, with both houses having two storeys and attics, and each has three windows with irregular spacing.
No. 40 has a projecting gabled outer bay that includes a round-arched entrance with brick impost bands, a panelled door with an overlight, and a projecting bay window with three sashes that have glazing bars only in the upper halves. The corners are accented with rusticated brick quoins and a cornice. There is a plain brick band at the first floor, which features a gauged brick flat arch above a flush frame tripartite sash and a sash window to the right, with a hood formed by a short return of the eaves, giving the gable the appearance of a broken pediment, though it is lower on this side than on the left. The gable also has a tripartite sash window with a brick relieving arch and moulded brickwork that continues down to the eaves.
No. 42 is similar but has shorter eaves returns that are symmetrically set. It features a tripartite dormer in the roof angle, with the outer lights breaking forward. The interiors have not been inspected.
