Description
The Superintendent's House at the Royal Hospital School is a house dating from approximately 1925 to 1933, designed by Buckland and Heywood. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with darker brick dressings and stone dressings, and has a hipped roof covered in dark red plain tiles. The principal north facade is symmetrical, with five bays. It features a moulded stone cornice, a simple brick band below it, and the walling rises to the eaves of the roof. Stacks are positioned to the left and right of the east and west fronts, and to the left and rear of the ridge. A central stone doorcase has an open segmental pediment, pilasters with stylized acanthus capitals, and a broken entablature bearing the initials "RHS" within a cartouche. The original glazed panelled door has been replaced. The window above the door is also in a moulded stone surround, flanked by scrolled consoles. Small, vertical lights are positioned to the left and right of the door. Horned sash windows with glazing bars are present throughout, except in the fourth bay, which contains a glazed door beneath an overlight. First-floor windows have 3 x 5 panes in the centre bay; the remaining windows have 3 x 4 panes. The fifth bay has a larger mullioned casement window of 4 x 4 panes, which appears to be original. Flat arches define the windows, with flush surrounds picked out in darker brickwork. Five small-paned dormer windows are situated beneath hipped tiled roofs.
The south-facing garden facade is also symmetrical, with three bays, the central one projecting. The arrangement of the cornice is similar to that of the north front. A pedimented stone doorcase features simple pilasters, a deep entablature, and a small pediment. A small-paned glazed door, consistent with the north front, sits within a deep flat stone surround. Brick canted bays with stone cornices and horned sash windows with glazing bars flank the central bay, each topped with an iron balcony. Three first-floor windows have darker brick flush surrounds and flat arches. A central dormer is a tripartite casement beneath a hipped roof, and is flanked by stone urns with finials and a connecting iron balcony. Dormer windows with hipped roofs are located on either side. A stack rises from the front of the roof between the first and second bays. Attached to the left is a single-storey service wing and garage, featuring a verandah facing the garden. A single-storey, hipped-roofed bay is attached to the right, forming part of the east facade.
