Description

Nelson House at the Royal Hospital School is an accommodation house for pupils, built around 1925 to 1933 by Buckland and Heywood. The building is constructed of red brick with some stone elements and features red tiled roofs that are hipped on the north and south cross-wings. It has a quadrangular plan, with the north and south wings extending forward from the main (west) face. The structure is mainly two storeys high, with a single storey east (rear) service and toilet wing.

The north, south, and west faces are parapeted and adorned with textured and coloured brick panels, which also frame the windows. The building has rusticated brick quoins and a band below the parapet. There are red brick chimneystacks on either side of the west portico. The west face features a window arrangement of 1:2:3:2:1, consisting of small paned vertically sliding sashes. Notably, the second and eighth long first-floor windows do not have ground floor windows beneath them.

A large, full-height stone portico is located in front of the three central bays, featuring an entablature and triangular pediment supported by four pairs of pilasters and columns with moulded capitals and bases. The frieze includes paterae, while the pediment displays carved cherubs, coats of arms, and naval insignia. The moulded stone doorway is topped with a pediment on brackets, and there is a small paned glazed door with tracery in the fanlight above.

At the centre of the building is a dome supported by six columns on a polygonal base, with a ribbed lead dome that holds a weathervane and a large copper model of Nelson's ship, HMS Victory. The north and south faces have a similar window arrangement of 3:1:3, with corresponding dressings. A central stone door surround features pilasters with capitals and bases, and the name 'Nelson' inscribed on the frieze, with side finials and an angled bay window above.

The courtyard is arcaded at the ground floor, and in front of the west portico, there are two contemporary stone benches.
