Description
The infirmary at the Royal Hospital School, built between 1925 and 1933 by Buckland and Heywood, is a former medical facility constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with darker brick dressings and plain tile hipped roofs. The building is two storeys high and features a north facade with end stacks and a ridge stack above the third first-floor bay. It has seven bays, with the ground floor displaying a pair of windows in each bay. The first floor has seven 3 x 4 paned horned sash windows with glazing bars, and there is a darker brick flush band at cill level.
The central doorway on the ground floor has a stone surround supported by corbels and topped with a segmental pediment. Below this doorway are a pair of part-glazed doors with an overlight featuring glazing bars. The alternate windows on the left and right have a semi-circular head outlined in darker brick, while the remaining windows have a dark brick flat arch, connected by a brick band at lintel height. Each side of the building has five 3 x 4 paned horned sashes with glazing bars, along with additional inner and outer windows of 2 x 4 panes.
On either side, there are single-storey flat-roofed blocks that project forward, each containing a tripartite horned sash with glazing bars. The right-hand return of the right block has paired doors with an overlight similar to the main front, along with two windows on either side, one of which is a blind opening matching the glazed window to the left. Each side has an inner 3 x 4 paned window.
To the south, the wards are arranged in a butterfly plan. This single-storey section features canted wings on the south front, with a central bay that breaks forward and includes a central tripartite sash with glazing bars, flanked by 2 x 4 paned windows. There are glazed doors with overlights on the flanks, and five-bay sections to the left and right, with an arch containing a central door and various small paned windows. The outer wing to the left has seven bays, while the right wing has eight bays, with the left wing containing only windows and the right wing including two glazed doors. Remnants of a former verandah attached to the south front can be seen, with flooring and brackets for the roof still in place.
