Description

Numbers 20-28 and attached railings form a terrace of nine houses on the east side of Chalcot Square, built between 1855 and 1860, and subsequently altered. The houses are constructed of stucco, with rusticated ground floors that are mostly painted. Nos. 20, 23-25 and 28 have slate mansard roofs with dormers.

The houses are three storeys high with attics and basements, except for Nos. 21 & 22 and 26 & 27, which are slightly taller with four storeys and basements (Nos 22 & 26 have 20th-century penthouses). Each house has three windows. They feature prostyle Doric porticoes supporting balustraded stucco balconies that extend across the first-floor windows. The doorways have cornice heads, fanlights, side lights, and panelled doors, some of which include glazed panels. Ground-floor windows are tripartite sashes. The projecting houses have panelled pilasters at the angles rising from the first floor to support the main entablature, which features a modillion cornice that continues across the other houses, situated below the attic storey. Upper-floor windows have lugged architraves and margin glazing. The first floors are joined by a continuous cornice with keystones above the windows and console brackets between, with pediments over the central windows of the projecting houses (segmental). The second floor also has keystones, with the central windows having a large keystone projecting into the architrave above. The attic storeys include pilaster strips at the angles, a cornice, and a blocking course.

The interiors were not inspected. Attached cast-iron railings are present around the areas.
