Description

Numbers 29-33 and 33A, together with their attached railings, form a terrace of six houses on the north side of Chalcot Square. They were built between 1855 and 1860, and subsequently altered. The houses are constructed of stucco, with rusticated ground floors which are mostly painted. Numbers 29, 31, and 32 have slate mansard roofs with dormers.

The terrace is three storeys high with attics and basements, except for numbers 30 and 33, which are slightly projecting and have four storeys and basements. Number 33A has a 20th-century attic storey. Each house has three windows, and the frontages are generally regular. Each house has a prostyle Doric portico supporting a balustraded stucco balcony across the first-floor windows (number 32 having solid stucco). The doorways have cornice heads, fanlights, sidelights, and panelled doors, some of which are part glazed. The ground floor windows are tripartite sashes, except for number 33A.

The projecting houses employ panelled pilasters at the angles, rising from the first-floor level to support the main entablature, which has a modillion cornice and is carried across the other houses below the attic storey. Upper floor windows feature lugged architraves and margin glazing. The first floors are unified by a continuous cornice, with keystones above the windows and console brackets between; pediments are positioned over the central windows of the projecting houses, which are segmental. Second-floor windows also have keystones, with the central window's keystone projecting into the architrave above. The attic storeys have pilaster strips at the angles, a cornice, and a blocking course. The interiors have not been inspected. Cast-iron railings are attached to the areas.
