Description
The Engineer Public House and attached wall is a public house located at 65 Gloucester Avenue, built around 1845-1850 for Calverts the brewers. It is constructed of brown stock brick with a stucco ground storey and dressings, topped with a slate roof, and designed in the Italianate style.
The exterior features a square composition of three storeys on all sides, with a strong bracketed cornice and parapet, and heavy quoins at the corners. The building faces Gloucester Avenue and Princess Road, showcasing a stuccoed facade with windows to the bar on the ground storey, likely added in the later 19th century. This includes projecting iron light fixtures shaped like dragons flanking the entrances. The upper sections have three windows on each of the two storeys, with stucco surrounds and keystones, while the centre windows at first-floor level have swept sides and pediments. The two rear facades are less symmetrical, featuring external chimneybreasts that break through the parapets.
Inside, the bar has lost most of its fittings of special interest, except for the cornices. However, the exterior remains a good example of an early Victorian public house. A high stuccoed wall runs along Princess Road in front of the yard, serving as a subsidiary feature.
