Description
The Prince of Teck Public House is a public house built in 1868 by Huggett and Hussey for the Child family. It was embellished with balustrading, stone wyverns, and busts in 1879-80 by George Edwards, and features a bar front and interior from around 1901. The building is constructed of white brick with stuccoed dressings and has a roof concealed behind a parapet, showcasing an Italianate style.
The exterior consists of four storeys with three windows facing Earls Court Road. The Kenway Road elevation has four windows on the left and one window on the right at three storeys. An elaborate balustraded parapet with ball finials and three stone wyverns adorns the top. There is a paired eaves cornice, and the windows have moulded architraves but no glazing bars, except for an extension that features verticals only. The second-floor windows display bas reliefs of the Prince of Teck, along with two terracotta panels featuring bronze reliefs of the Prince. The first-floor windows are supported by brackets under their architraves. The polished granite bar front is complemented by elaborate brackets at the end of the fascia, and the façade is enhanced by composite pilasters with gilt capitals and colonettes.
Inside, the public house retains its c1901 mahogany bar fitting and counter, dado panelling, lincrusta ceiling and walls, and a Jacobean style fireplace. The fireplace features baluster-shaped pilasters, a pink marble bolection moulded surround, and a mirror flanked by fluted pilasters.
