TQ2685NE ROSSLYN HILL 798-1/27/1396 (South West side) 01/07/98 Drinking fountain attached to the wall of No.65 (No.65 not included)

GV II

Drinking fountain. c1875. Probably provided by the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain & Cattle Trough Association. Polished granite. Round-arched slab with semicircular animal bowl at base with the inscription "The merciful man is merciful to his beast". Above, a projecting semicircular basin with fountain inscribed on the slab above "Jesus said Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst". Head with an incised pattern and inscribed around the arch "Ask and ye shall receive: Seek and ye shall find". An uncommon survival of a type depicting the Victorian association of providing free fresh water to the masses with evangelical piety.
