Description

This is a drinking fountain attached to the wall of number 65, built around 1875. It was likely provided by the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain & Cattle Trough Association. The fountain is made of polished granite and features a round-arched slab with a semicircular animal bowl at the base, which has the inscription "The merciful man is merciful to his beast." Above this is a projecting semicircular basin, with an inscription on the slab that reads, "Jesus said Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst." The head of the fountain has an incised pattern, and around the arch, it is inscribed, "Ask and ye shall receive: Seek and ye shall find." This fountain is a rare example of the Victorian effort to provide free fresh water to the public, reflecting a blend of social service and evangelical belief.
