Description

This building, originally a Hampstead Brewery and now comprising flats with shops on the ground floor, was constructed in 1869. It is built of darkened yellow stock brick with decorative brick cornices, stucco dressings, and has a shallow hipped slate roof with a central chimney stack and projecting eaves featuring a stepped brick cornice.

The building is four storeys high, with cellars, and has five windows. Number 9, on the left at ground floor level, features an elaborate vehicle archway supported by pilasters with enriched capitals. These pilasters support brackets shaped like barley sheaves and barrels, flanking a segmental arch with a keystone and shaped pediment. Inscribed on the pediment are the words "Established 1720/Brewery/Rebuilt 1869". To the right of the archway, there is an original timber shopfront with a round-cornered plate-glass window, colonnettes, a panelled door with a round-cornered overlight, a fascia, and a bracket. Further to the left is a fine late 19th century shopfront characterized by thick curly cast-iron columns and a large frieze. The upper floors contain two-paned sash windows. The first-floor windows have guttae drops, keystones and small scrolled pediments with balls, while the second-floor windows have keystones and bracketed sills with enriched cast-iron guards.

The interior has not been inspected. The rear brewery mews, specifically numbers 1 and 2, have been rebuilt and are not included in this listing.
