Description
Hampstead Road Lock on the Grand Union Canal is a pair of canal locks built around 1818-1820, with some 20th-century alterations. The locks feature brick chambers with stone coping and a central island platform. Each lock is equipped with two sets of double wooden gates, along with wood and steel balance beams. The gearing for the ground paddles is located at the top, while the gate paddle gearing is at the bottom. The walls include steps leading down to a lower level, and the lockside surfaces are paved with brick. Historically, the Regent's Canal arm of the Grand Union Canal was constructed between 1812 and 1820, engineered by James Morgan and supervised by John Nash.
