Description
A terrace of 17 houses built between 1725 and 1726. Designed by Lewis Vulliamy and constructed by G Anstey and JA Frampton. The houses are of darkened stock brick with stucco ground floors, with rusticated detailing to numbers 29, 32, 35, 39, 43, and 45. The roofs are slated, with numbers 34 to 45 having a 20th-century felted mansard with dormers.
The houses are four storeys high, with attics and basements, each featuring three windows. The facade is symmetrical, with number 37, the central house, slightly projecting and featuring four engaged Ionic columns rising through the first and second floors; numbers 29, 31, 35, 39, 43, and 45 also project, with Ionic pilasters extending through the first and second floors, the columns and pilasters supporting a main entablature at third-floor level. Round-arched entrances have pilaster jambs with cornice heads, fanlights, and panelled doors. Doorways to numbers 36-40 and 42-44 have been converted to windows. Entrances to numbers 29 and 45 are on the side returns; number 45 features pilasters supporting a cornice, while number 29 has a portico surmounted by a balustrade with vases. The ground floor windows are square-headed recessed sashes, except for number 37, which has round-arched windows. The first-floor windows are casements with cast-iron balconies. The second and third floors have gauged brick flat arches over recessed sashes, most with glazing bars. The attic storey has pilaster strips above bays with pilasters. A cornice sits above the attic storey, except for numbers 35-39 which have balustraded parapets. The north return of number 29 continues the entablature and pilaster treatment, forming a balanced composition linked by a low screen wall with number 36 Gordon Square. Similarly, the south return of number 45 continues the entablature and pilaster treatment and is linked by a screen wall with number 53 Gordon Square.
The interiors were not inspected.
Attached cast-iron railings with urn finials decorate the areas. Number 36 was listed separately in 1974.
