Description

Numbers 5-9 on Percy Street are a row of five terraced houses built between 1764 and 1770, with later shops added. They were constructed by W. Franks and W. Reeves and feature multi-coloured stock brick with slated mansard roofs and dormers. The first floor has stucco sill and floor bands, except for No. 5, which has a rusticated stucco ground floor that is now painted. The buildings are three storeys high, with attics and basements, and most have three windows each, except for No. 6, which has two. The windows are recessed sash types, mostly with original glazing bars, and are topped with gauged brick flat arches.

No. 5 has a round-arched doorway with a fanlight and a panelled door, along with a 20th-century shop window. No. 6 features a square-headed doorway with a rectangular fanlight and a panelled door, also with a 20th-century shopfront. No. 7 has a square-headed doorway with a fanlight and panelled double doors, and a 20th-century shop window adorned with 19th-century filigree ironwork. The first-floor centre window is elongated. No. 8 has a painted ground floor with a round-arched doorway featuring panelled jambs, a cornice-head, a radial patterned fanlight, and a panelled door, along with an elongated first-floor centre window. No. 9 has a painted ground floor and a 20th-century shopfront, with a round-arched doorway that includes a wooden doorcase, pilasters, and a fanlight above a panelled door.

The interiors have not been inspected, but No. 8 is noted to retain a panelled ground floor front room and hall. Additionally, there are attached cast-iron railings with torch flambe finials and cast-iron lamp brackets flanking the entrance to No. 8.
