Description
Number 22 is a former stained glass studio built in 1859 by RJ Withers in the Gothic style for Lavers and Barraud, who were known for their stained glass work. The building is constructed of red brick featuring blue and yellow patterns and bands, with stone dressings. It has a slated roof with symmetrically arranged gabled dormers and a Lombardic eaves frieze, along with a crowstep gable on the return to Betterton Street.
The structure stands three storeys high with attics and has seven windows, including a two-window return. The central doorway features a cusped, truncated arched head and a panelled door. The ground and first floor have sash windows with relieving arches above and truncated cusped heads, except for the windows to the left of the entrance, which are of lancet type. A stone band at the second floor level is inscribed "Lavers and Barraud, stained glass works." The second floor and dormer windows are also of lancet type. The gable facing Betterton Street includes a large pointed arch window that contains 20th-century stained glass.
The building has attached cast-iron railings in front of the areas. Lavers and Barraud were highly regarded manufacturers of Gothic Revival stained glass. The interior has not been inspected.
