Description
Brownlow House is a late 17th or early 18th century house with a later shop. It is constructed of brown brick with a stuccoed ground floor, and has a stuccoed brick band at the second-floor level. The house is four storeys high with a basement, and it has three bays. The central entrance has a wood doorcase with paired reeded pilasters supporting an entablature with a dentil cornice. To the left of the entrance is a later shop with a doorway containing a four-panel door under a continuous entablature. The shop has a window with small panes. The building has gauged flat red brick arches to flush-framed windows with exposed boxing and late 18th century glazing bars. The roofline has a repaired parapet.
The interior of the house is fine and original, with panelled rooms and a staircase rising the full height of the building. This contributes to the building’s group value.
Attached to the house are good wrought iron railings with urn finials.
