Description
The Marlborough Public House is a terrace house with shops, built around 1840-1850 as part of the Mercers Company Estate development. It features stock brick construction with stucco dressings and slate roofs, rising three storeys plus an attic storey and mansard. The front of No. 36 is three windows wide with a three-window return, while Nos 37 and 40 each have three windows, and No. 39 has two windows. No. 36 includes a public house front with a corner entrance, and the other properties have shop fronts that have been variously altered but all retain the framework of plain pilasters supporting an entablature-fascia. The upper floors are adorned with recessed glazing bar sashes set in stucco architraves, with the first-floor windows pedimented, except for No. 37, which features giant Corinthian pilasters extending through two storeys. A modillion cornice is present over the second floor, and the pilastered attic storey is topped with a balustrade that incorporates tablets inscribed "Marlborough Head" above No. 36 and "Victoria House" above No. 40. The building is included for its group value at the junction with Long Acre.
