Description

The Hartley family mausoleum, located in Highgate (Western) Cemetery, was built in 1860 by the architect P MacDowell, who was active from 1822 to 1870. This impressive structure is designed in an Egyptian style and constructed from grey granite. It features battered sides, a cavetto cornice adorned with hieroglyphics, and a terminal shaped like a large canopic vase, along with other Egyptian motifs. Above the pylon-shaped doorway, there is an armorial achievement set above a winged sun-disc. The door is made of marble and iron. The earliest legible inscription found on the mausoleum is dedicated to Kathleen Carter, who passed away in 1923.
