Description
The tomb of George Wombwell is located in Highgate (Western) Cemetery and dates from around 1850. It is a chest tomb made of marble, featuring a rectangular plan with recessed panels, some of which are inscribed. The tomb has a coved cornice and a projecting lid that is topped by a sculptured figure of a sleeping lion, with its right paw resting on its left, all set on a stepped plinth.
George Wombwell was known as the founder of Wombwell's Menageries, which became the largest travelling menagerie in England.
