Description

The Cory-Wright Mausoleum is a rectangular stone structure located on a slope overlooking the Egyptian Avenue. It features large ashlar blocks that create a smooth base and a rusticated superstructure with alternating vermiculated courses. The roof is made of stone slabs and is supported by kneelered end gables. The entrance is situated on the uphill (northwest) side and is flanked by dwarf walls. It has an arched doorway with a moulded surround, topped by a large keystone that displays a scrolled cartouche. The doors are made of bronze or bronzed iron, featuring baluster and rosette openwork designs, and include a plaque that reads 'W Richardson & Co., Brownlow Street, Holborn W.C.'. At the rear gable, there is a quatrefoil traceried window. Inside, the mausoleum has a mosaic floor and a single transverse ceiling rib. The quatrefoil window contains flame-coloured stained glass and is surrounded by a text from Deuteronomy 33:27: 'The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.' The walls are lined with white marble sarcophagi, two on each side, adorned with multiple Gothic canopies that hold pink marble inscription tablets commemorating Sir Cory Francis Cory-Wright, his wife, and children. Additionally, small marble caskets are placed atop the sarcophagi and on a shelf on the rear wall to honor other family members.
