Description
The mausoleum of Lieutenant Colonel William Haywood, who was the architect of the City of London Cemetery and died in 1889, is a Grade II listed building. It is constructed of ragstone with ashlar dressings and features a leaded pitched roof. This single-storey building is designed in a gabled Gothic style and is one bay wide. It has a pointed entrance arch with a solid tympanum that bears an inscription. The mausoleum retains its original wrought iron gates, and the side walls are panelled with inscriptions. At the corners, there are pinnacles adorned with monster gargoyles. Inside, there is a shelf at the rear that holds male and female busts. The inscription notes that Haywood was cremated at Woking Cemetery, which occurred two years after the first official cremation. The mausoleum is located along the main avenue to the north-east of the main gates.
