Description
The South Chapel at the City of London Cemetery was built between 1903 and 1904, designed by engineer D T Ross, as indicated by tablets on the building. This chapel, which was formerly a crematorium, is constructed of rubblestone with ashlar dressings and features a tiled roof decorated with fishscale patterns. It has a gabled Gothic design with a steeply pitched roof that reaches the parapet. A tower is set back to the right, featuring a triple louvred upper stage and a pyramidal roof topped with an elaborately ornamented octagonal iron flue. The central entrance to the chapel includes a pointed moulded arch and an original traceried timber door, flanked by double blind arcades. On either side of the chapel are ogee-headed windows, and there are gabled corner buttresses. There is a later Chapel of Remembrance extension at the rear, which is not of significant interest. This chapel is notable as the second crematorium in London and was originally coke-fired. The interior has not been seen.
