Description
The World War II Commemorative Monument at Manor Park Cemetery is a war memorial built in 1950 by the Imperial War Graves Commission, designed by architect R. Hobday. It features a low screen wall made of Portland stone, set within a stone kerb. The center of the monument consists of a square block that is slightly larger than the rest of the wall, displaying the arms of the Borough of East Ham on each side. The names of 57 civilian victims of enemy bombing, who are buried in a mass grave below, are inscribed along the sides and ends of the memorial. Originally, the memorial was intended to be accessed via an axial path with a York stone threshold, surrounded by a yew hedge, with eight silver birches planted and two bench seats installed. At the time of inspection in 2001, the memorial was weathered and its setting neglected. It serves as a restrained but poignant testament to the civilian losses of World War II.
