Description

Numbers 1-8 on Southampton Place is a terrace of eight houses built around 1785 to 1863, likely under the direction of Henry Flitcroft. The houses are constructed from darkened multi-coloured stock brick and feature a stone band at the first-floor level. They have tiled mansard roofs with dormers, are three storeys high, and include attics and basements, with three windows for each house. The windows have gauged brick flat arches and are recessed sash windows, while there are bracketed cornices below the parapets.

No. 1 has a wooden architraved doorcase with carved consoles and a pedimented cornice. Nos. 2 and 3 feature semicircular-headed entrances with patterned fanlights and panelled doors, with No. 2 having margin lights and No. 3 showcasing a doorframe with a fluted frieze, cornice, and fluted pilasters with foliated capitals. Nos. 4, 5, and 7 have wooden doorcases with engaged Doric columns supporting an entablature and pediment, along with fanlights and panelled doors. Nos. 6 and 8 have stone doorcases with carved consoles and cornices, with No. 8 featuring a pediment.

All entrances are accessed by steps over basement areas. The interiors have not been inspected but are noted to retain good staircases, fireplaces, and panelling, particularly in Nos. 4, 5, 6, and 8, which are especially fine. Additionally, there are attached cast-iron railings with torch flambe finials surrounding the areas.
