Description
Numbers 3 to 16 on Great James Street are a row of 14 terraced houses built between 1720 and 1724 for J Metcalfe. The buildings are constructed of brown brick, with the upper storeys featuring some later refacing in multi-coloured stock brick. Notably, No. 3 has been refaced in yellow stock brick.
The houses are four storeys tall with basements, each featuring three windows. They have segmental red brick arches and dressings around flush frame windows, some of which include glazing bars, while others have reeded frames with roundels. The buildings have parapets and wooden doorcases with architraves.
Nos. 3 and 4 are distinguished by half pilasters, plain pediments, patterned fanlights, and panelled doors. Nos. 5, 7, and 10 to 16 showcase enriched carved brackets supporting hoods with panelled soffits, most of which have patterned radial fanlights and panelled doors. No. 6 is particularly elaborate, featuring engaged columns in the Tower of Winds style, a frieze adorned with festooned urns, a dentil cornice, a round arched doorway with a fanlight, and a panelled door. Nos. 8 and 9 also have pilasters, dentil cornices, patterned radial fanlights, and panelled doors.
Between the houses, there are lead rainwater heads with lion masks and lead pipes. At the second floor level of No. 16, there is a very worn stone cartouche inscribed "Great James Street 1721".
Inside, most houses feature good panelling, open staircases with turned balusters, column newels, and carved brackets supporting the treads. The properties also have attached cast-iron railings with urn or torch flambe finials. No. 14 was listed separately on May 14, 1974.
