Description

Fourteen terraced houses were built between 1720 and 1724 for J Metcalfe. The houses are constructed of brown brick, with some upper storeys refaced using multi-coloured yellow and brown stock brick. The houses are arranged as four storeys with basements, with each house originally having three windows. Numbers 27 to 38 and 40 feature elaborate doorcases with carved brackets supporting hoods with panelled soffits; many have patterned fanlights and panelled doors. Number 27 has a 20th-century hood, while Number 39 has a doorcase with pilasters, a plain cornice, a radial fanlight, and a panelled door. The windows are flush framed with red segmental arches and dressings; the upper storeys of Number 35 have glazing bars. Some window frames have been reeded with roundels. Parapets top the facades, and some original lead rainwater heads with lion masks remain. The interiors largely retain fine panelling, and the staircases generally have twisted balusters, column newels, and carved brackets for the treads. Attached cast-iron railings with urn or torch flambe finials decorate the areas.
