Description

Numbers 23, 24, and 25, along with the attached railings, are a group of three houses originally built in the 18th century and reconstructed in the 20th century to resemble an early 18th-century style. Numbers 23 and 24 have been combined into a single residence with a central doorway. The houses are constructed of yellow stock brick with red brick dressings, and have tiled mansard roofs; Number 23/24 includes dormers.

The houses are four storeys high, with an attic and basement, and have five windows each for Numbers 23 and 24, and three windows for Number 25. They feature flush-framed, two-paned sash windows set within gauged red brick flat arches, with reeded frames and roundels. Parapets top the facades. The doorway to Numbers 23 and 24 has a rusticated stucco surround and a reused wooden doorcase featuring Ionic columns supporting an open segmental pediment with a pulvinated frieze, a modillion cornice, and a phoenix relief in the tympanum. It contains a round-arched doorway with panelled jambs, a fanlight, and a panelled door; the doorcase was originally from Number 40 Great Ormond Street. Number 25 has a reused early 18th-century wooden doorcase with architraves, enriched carved brackets carrying a dentil hood with a panelled soffit, a patterned fanlight, and a panelled door.

The interiors have not been inspected. Attached cast-iron railings with spike finials define the areas. These features, alongside the doorcases, are included in the listing for group value. Numbers 23 and 24 were initially listed on 14 May 1974.
