Description

78 Burton End is a Grade II listed building located in Haverhill. This structure consists of two houses that were combined into one dwelling around 1953, with additional alterations made since then. The building dates back to the mid-17th century and features a timber frame that is rendered and colourwashed in panels. The roofs are thatched with water reed and have brick stacks.

The layout is L-shaped, with a single storey and a dormer attic, presenting a three-window front. To the right of the center, there is a six-panel door with glazed upper panels, accessed by two steps and set in a gabled porch. Flanking the door are two late 19th-century two-light small-pane casement windows, while at the far left is an early 19th-century unhorned sash window with eight panes over eight. The gabled dormer features a 20th-century two-light casement window, and there is an external gable-end stack on the right side. A single-storey rear wing includes an axial stack.

Although the interior was not inspected, a survey from 1993 noted chamfered bridging beams in two rooms. The upper floor of the rear wing has wide oak floorboards and oak joists, and there is evidence of a substantial frame, mostly concealed. A 19th-century newel stair is located in the rear wing, and an internal stack in the front range was removed in the mid-20th century.
