Description
The Corn Exchange, now serving as a community centre and offices, was built in 1889 by Frank Whitmore. It features red brick construction with moulded brick details and a slate roof, which replaced the original glazed roof.
The exterior showcases a single-storey gabled front facing the street, positioned behind a flat-roofed narthex. The central entrance in the narthex has a doorway set back behind a basket-arched opening, flanked by engaged columns with fluted bases. On either side of the entrance, there are two-light casements under basket arches. The window jambs, aprons, and lintels are decorated with moulded brick. A panelled and balustraded parapet crowns the building. Above the main gable wall, there is a triple-arched casement under a basket arch, set within a raised and pedimented field, with a double-curved pediment at the apex of the gable. The returns consist of six bays, marked by pilasters, with triple-arched casements under basket arches, similarly detailed with moulded brick.
Inside, the east end features three arches with Y-traceried heads, and pilasters line the north and south walls.
