Description

Haverhill War Memorial is located in Haverhill Cemetery on Withersfield Road. The memorial features a Latin cross with a tapering polygonal shaft set on a stepped moulded plinth that includes a carved wreath and inset panels. On the first step of the plinth, there is an inscription that reads: "FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH / THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED BY THE / INHABITANTS OF HAVERHILL IN / GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THOSE WHO / LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE / GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919 / 'GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS / THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS / FRIENDS'." The other panels list the names of those who fell.

The plinth is supported by a three-stepped octagonal base, surrounded by an octagonal paved area enclosed by a low stone wall. This wall features granite panels that commemorate those who died during the Second World War. One of these panels states: "THESE PANELS WERE PLACED/ HERE BY THE INHABITANTS/ OF HAVERHILL IN GRATEFUL/ MEMORY OF THOSE WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/ SECOND WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945," while the other plaques list the names of the fallen.

Low stone walls also enclose the paths leading to the memorial. Along one of these paths, there is a plaque set into the paving that reads: "1914 + 1919/ WE WILL/ REMEMBER THEM/ 1939 + 1945." Another plaque commemorates "FORTY-TWO MEN OF THE/ BRITISH COMMONWEALTH/ EMPIRE AND ALLIED NATIONS/ WHO DIED IN THEIR COUNTRY'S/ SERVICE AND WHOSE MORTAL/ REMAINS REST NEAR/ THIS CROSS."
