Description
A group of 33 headstones removed from St James' Churchyard and set in a row against the wall at the east end of the Abbey Precincts, Great Churchyard.
MON 379: 1740. Ketton stone headstone to Martha Crane. Features a winged angel head with swags of flowers in a very good design.
MON 380: 18th century (date uncertain). York stone headstone to Robert Thompson. Plain design.
MON 381: Early 19th century. York stone headstone. Inscribed with partial surname "-PSON". Plain and very worn.
MON 382: 1810s (date uncertain). Ketton stone headstone commemorating Mary Mazaber Thompson (1833), Robert Thompson, her brother (1831), Sarah Thompson, mother (1853), and Zarah Ann (1810s). Plain design.
MON 383: 1873 or 1875. Portland stone headstone to William James Mostram. Victorian design.
MON 384: 1807. Ketton stone headstone to Mary Fulcher (1807) and John Fulcher (1827). Decorated with a draped urn.
MON 385: 1757. Ketton stone headstone inscribed H.B. Features two winged angel heads flanking a crown with drapes at the sides.
MON 386: 1741. Ketton stone headstone commemorating a person aged 23. Features a winged angel head and scrolled top.
MON 387: 1714. Ketton stone headstone commemorating a person aged 17. Two winged angel heads with flowers and fruit down the sides.
MON 388: 1711. Ketton stone headstone to William Day. Features a good cartouche inscribed "Here lyeth ye body of Willm. son of Willm. and Ann Day who died ye 19th day of December 1711 aged 11 months". The letter t is missing and the s is displaced into the foliage at the cartouche side. The design includes a skull over crossed bones flanked by winged angel heads with foliage at the sides.
MON 389: 1690. Ketton stone headstone to John Reckling (1690) and Mary Scott (1846). An interesting palimpsest, reused at a much later date. The original obverse side is beautifully lettered and well preserved, reading "Here lyeth ye body of John Reckling who dyed October ye 6 day 1690 Aged 45". The design features a winged angel head with crossed wings and scrolls forming the top, with a bellied cartouche. The reverse commemorates Mary Scott.
MON 390: 1828. Ketton stone headstone to James Hoy (1828) and Martha, his wife (1835). Plain design; the lettering was once painted.
MON 391: 1710. Ketton stone headstone to the wife of William Herbert, late watchmaker in Fenchurch Street, London. Features an angel's head without wings, heavily draped and flanked by skulls, with scrolls and foliage at the sides of a bellied inscription panel. In very good condition.
MON 392: 1826. Portland stone headstone to Isaac Chesson and his wife. Shows a cherub with his right hand on a skull, holding his left hand to his eyes as if weeping, set in an oval flanked by urns.
MON 393: 1724. Ketton stone headstone (date uncertain) with inscription from 1724 and Mary, wife (1755). Features a large design of a skull flanked by winged angel heads.
MON 394: 1800s (date uncertain). York stone headstone inscribed "STER...SCOTT". A standing figure of Hope in an oval. Very worn.
MON 395: Early 19th century. York stone headstone to William Ster[...]. Features a seated cherub in an oval flanked by foliage, with back half turned, writing on a tablet.
MON 396: 1771. Ketton stone headstone to Thomas Cocksedge (1784) and Ann, his wife (1771). Two winged angel heads with an eggshell festoon.
MON 397: 1800. Portland stone headstone with no surviving name. Neo-Classical design showing a pedestal-tomb with a larger festooned urn flanked by reversed torches. Oval inscription panel with fan decoration in corners.
MON 398: 1685. Ketton stone headstone to Bernard Mills (1710), Elizabeth (1685) and Alice (1706), his wives. Features a winged angel head with festoons of foliage and flowers down the sides of the inscription panel.
MON 399: 1744. Ketton stone headstone to Robert Hayward (1744) and his wife (1761). Design with two winged angel heads.
MON 400: 1745. Ketton stone headstone to William Pizey (1755) and Mary (1745). Decorated with a good winged angel head.
MON 401: 1791. Ketton stone headstone to Sarah Pizey, wife of W.P. A winged angel head with fine expression has a draped urn on its left and an hourglass on its right.
MON 402: 1719. Ketton stone headstone to an unnamed person (1730) and Susan, wife (1719). Design of an open book over crossed palms with double inscription panel.
MON 403: Early 19th century. Ketton stone headstone to Henry Miller. Two winged angel heads and foliage.
MON 404: 1830s (date uncertain). Ketton stone headstone to Elizabeth Challis and George, her son. Two winged angel heads with a raised edge to the inscription panel.
MON 405: Early 19th century. Ketton stone headstone inscribed "Here lies four children of John and Elizabeth Smith. Elizabeth, ...., ...., Robert. all dyed Infants". Large design of a skull over crossed bones with foliage over two neat winged angel heads.
MON 406: 18th century (date uncertain). Portland stone headstone to John Edward Cocksedge. Plain design. The name Edward has been carved over Frederick, a clear example of a mason's error.
MON 407: 17th century (date uncertain). Portland stone headstone to John Garnham (17th century), Ann, his wife (1821) and John, his son (1838). Design of a weeping seated cherub with a wreath in his right hand, his left elbow resting on a pedestal-tomb with a broken column, all within a draped oval.
MON 408: 1817. Portland stone headstone to John Dooley. Small cross in an oval.
MON 409: Early 19th century. Ketton stone headstone to an unnamed person and Sarah, his wife. A winged angel head over two oval inscription panels with crossed palms beneath them.
