Description

Nos. 152 and 154 on High Street are a pair of shops with dwellings above, originally known as Grosvenor House. They date from the early to mid 18th century and are two storeys tall with attics. The building features a three-window range that is recessed between two narrow wings, each one window wide. It is constructed of red brick with painted front elevation and has parapet gables. A string course runs along the first floor and at the gables, while the rear displays dentil eaves. The roofs are plaintiled with gable chimneys and flat-headed dormers, and the projecting wings are hipped. The windows have flat arches made of gauged brick and large-pane 20th-century replacement sashes. In the late 19th or early 20th century, a pair of one-storey flat-roofed shops were added to the front, each featuring moulded wooden pilasters and cornices, topped with wrought iron cresting and a frieze of trefoils.
