Description

This property, originally one house and now divided into three separate dwellings at 4, 5, and 6 Cross Green, dates primarily to the late 16th century, with later alterations and a partial rebuilding around 1800. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with a pantiled roof. It follows a three-cell plan. The structure is two storeys high, with a further attic in number 5. There are three windows, featuring small 19th and 20th-century casements with horizontal glazing bars. The entrances are through three plank doors. An internal stack is present, and a smaller external stack is located on the left gable end. The right wing, added around 1800, has mid-20th-century casement windows and a plank door, and also includes a small internal stack.

Inside, the hall in number 5 and the parlour in number 6 retain 16th-century chamfered ceiling joists. Two blocked parlour windows are present, featuring cavetto mullions. The parlour and chamber above have open fireplaces, the lining of which incorporates two different sizes of brick. A newel staircase is located by the stack in number 5. The upper floor of number 6 was raised and re-joisted in the 19th century due to subsidence. An original upper window with diamond mullions is still visible. There is evidence of reused materials, particularly in number 4. The original roof is largely concealed, but a lower row of stepped butt purlins in number 5 suggests a re-roofing occurred at some point.
