Description
This barn, located approximately 30 metres north of West House, dates from the late 18th century. It features a weatherboarded timber frame set on a plinth made of red brick and flint, topped with a pantile roof. The structure consists of eight bays and includes a separately enclosed, contemporary aisled section with a lean-to roof along the entire length of the south elevation. The north elevation has two full-height openings fitted with 20th-century doors.
Inside, the main frame exhibits characteristics typical of the 17th century, with hardwood that may have been reused from an earlier barn. The wall frames contain full-height studs and diagonal primary braces. The tie-beams and wall plates above the openings on the south wall are supported by arched braces. The central truss is open and features two large brackets, resembling base crucks, which are bolted to both the walls and the roof. All principal frame members are pegged, with some numbered. The wall plates display face halved and bladed scarf joints. The roof structure includes two tiers of joggled butt purlins, some arched wind-braces, and a ridge board. The underside of the south roof face retains areas of surviving lath and underplastering. The outer face of the main space, now enclosed by the lean-to, has early untarred elm weatherboards. The barn is depicted on a parish plan dated 1817 and is part of a group with West House.
