WALSHAM LE WILLOWS WEST STREET Barn approx. 30 metres north of West House

GV II

Barn. Late C18. Weatherboarded timber-frame on red brick and flint plinth. Pantile roof. 8 bays with separately enclosed, but contemporary, aisled section with lean-to roof along full length of south elevation. Two full-height openings on north elevation with C20 doors. INTEPIOR: The main frame is C17 in character, hardwood and possible reused from an earlier barn. Wall frames have full-height studs with diagonal primary braces. Tie-beams and wall plates above openings on south wall have arched braces. Central truss is open, but has two large brackets, similar in form to base crucks, bolted to both walls and roof. All principal frame members are pegged and some numbered. Face halved and bladed scarf joints to wall plates. Roof has two tiers of joggled butt purlins with some arched wind-braces, and ridge board. The underside of the south roof face has areas of surviving lath and underplastering. The outer (south) face of the main space (now enclosed by lean-to) has early untarred elm weatherboards. The barn is shown on a plan of the parish dated 1817 (Suffolk RO), and forms a group with West House (qv).
