Description
This is a barn located immediately north of the Old House in Market Lavington, dated 1820. It features a weatherboarded timber frame set on a tall red brick plinth with a stone rubble base. The gable-ended roof has been re-clad in asbestos sheets. The barn has a five-bay design with opposing doorways leading to the threshing floor in the central bay.
On the exterior, the west front includes a later projecting midstrey at the center with a lean-to roof, and there are later windows in the south gable end. A small loft opening is found in the north gable. The east side, which faces the road, has a central loading door positioned at a higher ground floor level above the road.
Inside, the barn has a five-bay frame with an aisle on the east side. The wall-posts and arcade-posts feature roll-moulding at the jowls, with curved braces connecting to the arcade-plates and tie-beams. The aisle-ties are intact, and one of the tie-beams is inscribed with "1820 July 10 WI." The structure includes queen-strut and collar trusses, staggered tenoned purlins, and a diagonal ridgepiece, with common rafters also intact. The wall framing consists of vertical studs and long straight tension-braces, although two wall-posts are missing on the west side north of the cart entrance. This barn is a well-constructed example of an early 19th-century timber-framed building and holds group value.
