Description

OLD NEWTON NEWTON HALL ROAD TM 06 SE WITH DAGWORTH 5/148 - Barn, 50 metres north-west of Old Newton Hall

GV II

Barn, early C17. 5 bays. Timber-framed and weatherboarded. Slated roof. An original gabled porch at centre bay, west side; barn doors missing; a set of 4 C19 boarded doors in rear wall opposite. Close-studding with middle rail and arch windbracing. Former long tiebeam braces (all removed and replaced by C19 bolted knees). 2-tier side purlin roof: the lower tier butted and the upper tier clasped, with pronounced reduction of principal rafters immediately above collar; four terminal bays only are windbraced. A rear range was added in later C17, but with interesting reuse of major C15 or early C16 components; a 2-bay building with a porch at centre bay. Reused members include tiebeams (one arch brace), rafters and wallplates from a domestic building of similar span with 2 storeys, diamond mullioned windows, close-studding and a crownpost roof.
