Description
This barn, located 50 metres north-west of Old Newton Hall, dates back to the early 17th century. It features five bays and is constructed with a timber frame and weatherboarding, topped with a slated roof. The barn has an original gabled porch at the center of the west side, although the barn doors are missing. Instead, there is a set of four 19th-century boarded doors on the rear wall. The structure showcases close-studding with a middle rail and arch windbracing. Originally, it had long tiebeam braces, but these have been removed and replaced with 19th-century bolted knees. The roof is a two-tier side purlin type, with the lower tier butted and the upper tier clasped, and there is a noticeable reduction of the principal rafters just above the collar. Only the four terminal bays are windbraced.
In the later 17th century, a rear range was added, which incorporates reused major components from a 15th or early 16th-century building. This addition consists of a two-bay structure with a porch at the center bay. The reused elements include tiebeams (one with an arch brace), rafters, and wallplates from a domestic building of similar span that featured two storeys, diamond mullioned windows, close-studding, and a crownpost roof.
