Description

Church Farmhouse is a former farmhouse constructed in two phases, around 1570 and again around 1620. It is a two-storey and attic building, originally with a three-cell plan and a cross-entry configuration, later altered to include a lobby entrance around 1620. The farmhouse has a timber-frame construction, now rendered with pebble-dashed finish. The parlour cross-wing, located on the left, features an oversailing gable tie beam with 17th-century drop finials beneath the bargeboards. The roof is covered in plain tiles. A 17th-century chimney, built of pink/buff brick, is centrally placed. Its base is moulded and offset, and the shaft has a sawtooth form. A red brick gable chimney is present on the right side. 19th-century small-pane casement windows are visible, with some replicated in the mid-20th century. A mid-19th-century red brick entrance porch has a slated roof with cusped bargeboards and a boarded door. The original main range, dating to around 1570, retains good chamfered first-floor joists and plain studwork, along with a clasped purlin roof. Within the cross-wing, close studding is visible, along with ovolo-mullioned windows (primarily blocked). Other features include on-edge deep floor joists and a wind-braced butt-purlin roof. Four fireplaces from the 17th century remain, each featuring a four-centred arch. The hall fireplace is wider and has a lintel.
