Description
The barn located 50 meters north of Winston Hall dates from the mid 16th century, with some alterations made in the 18th century. It features eight bays and is constructed from timber framing with weatherboarding and a pantiled roof. On the south side, there are sets of four boarded barn doors located at the third and seventh bays from the west. The barn is notable for its high-quality framing, which includes very closely-spaced studwork and prominent arch-windbracing. It has arch-braced tiebeams, and many braces and some beams were renewed in the 18th century. The roof, which is of the butt-purlin type from the 18th century, replaced an original roof that was likely of side-purlin or possibly coupled-rafter form. Additionally, an extension was added to the rear of bay 3 around 1800.
