Description
The Eye Theatre, formerly known as the White Lion Hotel, is located on Broad Street and was originally built in 1738. It underwent alterations in the 19th century and was converted into a theatre in 1988. The building features whitewashed and rendered brick with a machine tile roof. The entrance on the west side is designed in the style of a Greek temple front, added around 1975, and includes a pediment supported by a pair of unfluted columns in front of double glazed doors. To the east, there is a single-storey theatre block with four 6/9 unhorned sash windows arranged in a continuous range, along with a Venetian window in the east gable. Inside, the theatre has a flat ceiling adorned with late 20th-century plaster roundels and 19th-century cast-iron ventilator panels, as well as plank and muntin dado panelling.
