Description

The Conference Centre, originally a barn and stable, is located 100 meters southeast of Haughley Park House. The barn was added to the existing late 16th-century stable in the early 17th century. The barn is constructed of red brick in English bond, with the west and upper east gable being timber-framed and weatherboarded. It features a pantiled roof that was once thatched. On the south side, there is an original timber-framed and plastered porch, and high in the brickwork are two panels of eight ventilation slits that were glazed in the 20th century. The north wall has a row of blind recesses beneath the eaves. The mid-20th century doors and windows are framed and boarded, with leaded lights. Inside, there is a good two-tier butt-purlin roof, with the upper tier of purlins being windbraced. The stable section is timber-framed and plastered, featuring heavy framing. A loft that was located just below the eaves has been removed, leaving behind heavy binding beams that are mortised for joists. The east gable includes a mullioned window that now faces into the barn. The roof here is a clasped purlin design. The buildings were converted into a conference centre in 1977.
