Description
The Cottage is a house built in three stages: early 16th century, early 17th century, and early 19th century. It originally consists of a two-cell range that is one storey high with attics on the right. In the centre, there is a two-storey parlour block from the 17th century, and to the left, there is a set-forward two-storey addition from the 19th century. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with pantiled roofs; the lower range features areas of glazed tiles. An axial chimney from the early 17th century is made of red brick and has a sawtooth shaft, while the chimney in the left-hand block was rebuilt in 20th century red brick. The late 19th century windows are small-pane casements, and there is a boarded entrance door from the 19th century. The 16th century range includes a hall with service rooms to the right, showcasing plain and heavy framing with massive unchamfered floor joists. The parlour block has fully exposed framing and chamfered first floor joists, along with good lintelled back-to-back open fireplaces.
