Description

This is a post office, shop, and former dwelling, dating to the mid-16th century, or possibly the early 16th century. It was originally built as a 2-cell cross-entry house, with a further cell added around 1700. The building is timber-framed and now plastered, with a pantiled roof that was formerly thatched. There are 19th-century raking dormers with casements. Various 19th-century windows are visible, while the shop entrance, facing onto The Street, has a 20th-century half-glazed panelled door. The timber framing is considered good for a small 16th-century house, featuring studwork with tension-stud bracing. A half-hip remains within the left-hand gable, below which is a blocked diamond-mullioned window. The roof is likely of a coupled-rafter type. A rear cross-entry doorway has a damaged 4-centred arched head. Inside, there are heavy, unchamfered floor joists. The chimney backs onto the cross-entry, and the removal of the original service end partition, along with the addition of a fireplace, likely occurred around 1700 when that end was converted into a parlour. A further cell was added to the right-hand end at the same time.
