Description

A barn and stable dating to the 17th and 18th centuries, situated near Claypit Hall in Foxearth. The barn, aligned east-west, is a 5-bay structure with a steeply pitched, gable roof now covered in 20th-century corrugated sheeting. It has a pegged timber frame resting on a 19th and 20th-century brick plinth, with external weatherboarding on the north and west elevations, and a projecting midstrey to the south. Inside the barn, many lathe and plaster panels remain at the east end. The roof structure features braced tie beams, clasped purlins, and collars. The framing is pegged, of substantial scantling, close studded, incorporating arched tension braces and a wide use of mortice and tenon joints. Some 20th-century timber replacement has occurred, but the majority of the framing is original.

To the west of the barn is an 18th-century stable, a three-bay structure with a timber frame on a brick plinth containing 18th, 19th and 20th-century bricks, and weather-boarded cladding. It also has a steeply pitched, gable roof with a 20th-century corrugated metal covering. The interior of the stable exhibits a clasped purlin and tie beam roof truss, along with contemporary wall and cross framing, all pegged and using mortice and tenon joints. The floor is brick laid on edge, featuring central drainage channels and 19th-century mangers.

Historical records, including map evidence from the mid-19th century, indicate that the barn and stable, along with a cartlodge, were part of a larger complex of outbuildings extending southwest, arranged around cattle yards which have since been demolished. The barn is likely contemporary with Claypit Hall, although speculation exists that it may incorporate remnants of an earlier Hall building, evidenced by some reused timbers. The stable’s roof covering and weather-boarded cladding have been replaced, and the brick plinth has been patched. The barn and stable are prominently positioned to the north of Claypit Hall and reflect local vernacular building traditions. Despite some late 20th-century alterations, they retain much of their original character, particularly the stable’s brick floor, and contribute to the group value of Claypit Hall.
