Description

This is a 17th-century house with 19th-century alterations. The main part of the house is built of colourwashed red bricks and has a plaintiled roof. The eaves have a late 18th-century moulded wooden cornice with paired modillions. There are two axial chimneys, one with mid-19th-century decorative work in gault terracotta in the style of around 17th-century designs, including a diaperwork pattern and three circular shafts with corkscrew and diaper detailing. A second chimney has a smaller frieze and a single large white terracotta chimney pot with a diapered shaft. A further chimney on the rear roof slope has a similar terracotta shaft. The house has two storeys and attics, with four windows to the front. The early 19th-century sash windows have flush frames and originally had small panes, though most have been renewed with larger ones. The entrance is accessed via a six-panelled door with panelled linings, set back behind a Roman Doric portico porch with an entablature. To the left is an early 19th-century extension built of gault brick with a hipped slated roof, featuring a small-pane sash window above a six-panelled entrance door. There are further 19th-century wings at the rear. The group value of this building lies in its contribution to the historic streetscape.
