Description
Woolpit Institute is a museum and meeting room located in Woolpit Green Hill, dating from the early 16th century. The building has two storeys and two bays, constructed with a timber frame and plastered exterior. The framing is fully exposed, featuring plaster infill panels and arch windbraced close-studding. Originally, the first floor jutted out towards the street, but the front wall was pushed forward in the 18th or 19th century. The roof is covered with plain tiles.
On the first storey, there is a linked series of four windows; the outer pair consists of three-light casements, while the inner pair are mullioned. All windows have diamond leaded glazing. The ground storey features a pair of hipped bay windows, also with plain tiled roofs, connected by an open gabled porch supported by posts. The lintel of the porch is carved with "1914 IN MEMORIAM 1918." The inner entrance door is boarded. Inside, the upper room reveals an exposed crownpost roof, with plain square posts and four-way plank braces, along with a pair of long renewed rising braces extending from the tiebeam.
