Description
Pepys House, formerly known as Surgery Cottage, is a mid 16th century house located in Woolpit Green Hill. The building has two storeys and features three windows. It is constructed from timber framing and plaster, with the upper floor jettied towards the street. A moulded bressumer is present, and the close-studding is complemented by tension stud bracing at the corners. The ground storey walling is underbuilt in 20th century painted brick. The house has a thatched roof, which includes a central 17th century chimney made of red brick. On the first storey, there are three 17th or 18th century casement windows with leaded glazing, while the ground storey has 20th century casements and a circular window. The entrance door, which is from the 19th century, has six panels. The first floor members are unmoulded, and the roof features clasped purlins.
