Description
The building known as Swan House is a former part of the Swan Inn, with its origins dating back to the 16th century. It underwent remodelling in 1759, which is noted on the plaster gable of the right-hand dormer. The structure is timber-framed and encased in 18th-century red brick, featuring rusticated painted brick quoins. The roof is plaintiled and includes two gabled casement dormers with leaded lights.
The building has a large 18th-century axial chimney made of red brick, along with an internal end chimney on the left side, topped with a parapet gable. It stands two storeys high with attics and has three windows on the front. The first storey features three 18th-century three-light casements with leaded lights, while the ground storey has small-pane 19th-century sash windows with cambered heads. There is also a flat-roofed mid-20th-century splayed bay.
To the left, there is an 18th or 19th-century four-panelled entrance door with a small oblong fanlight above it. Another entrance has a 20th-century eight-panelled door with a flat canopy. Above this entrance is a prominent plastered niche with rusticated quoins, intended to hold a statue. Inside, one of the ground storey ceilings retains a heavy structure typical of the early 16th century, and it appears that the roof was raised in the 18th century.
