Description
H C Addison and Son is a shop and dwelling located in Woolpit, dating from the early 16th century. The building has two storeys and features three windows, arranged in a three-cell plan that was originally designed with a cross-entry but later modified to include a lobby entrance. It is constructed from timber framing and plaster, with the first floor jettied towards the street. Some areas of early plaster remain visible. The roof is covered with plain tiles, and there is a central chimney made of red brick that dates from the 17th or 18th century.
The windows include three-light 19th-century casements with transoms, and there are bay shop windows beneath the jetty flanking the entrance. The main entrance features a 19th-century six-panelled door, with the upper four panels being glazed. There is a second entrance door that is similar but has four panels, and a third entrance with a well-crafted late 16th or early 17th-century moulded plank door. Inside, all three cells at the ground floor have double-ogee moulded ceiling joists. A doorway with a four-centred arched head is located in the rear wall. The roof structure includes a plain 16th-century crownpost roof, which has been altered later with clasped purlins. The right-hand cell appears to be a rebuilding or extension from the late 16th century, while the left side features a lower single-cell extension from either the 16th or 17th century.
