Description
22 Castle Street is a house that was originally a pair of early 16th-century homes, which were converted into one in the late 20th century. The building features a plastered and whitewashed timber frame with a pantiled roof. It is two storeys high and has a three-window range. The exterior includes two 20th-century doors alternating with two three-light late 20th-century casements. The first floor is lit by two two-light and one three-light late 20th-century casements. The roof is gabled, and there is a central inserted ridge stack positioned at the lobby entrance.
Inside, there is a stack of early 17th-century brick in the northern room, while the fireplace in the southern room was rebuilt in the early 18th century, featuring a chamfered bressumer. The bressumer for the northern fireplace is from the late 20th century. The timber frame is constructed with heavy scantling, including middle rails, chamfered bridging beams with mortices for arched braces, and jowled principal posts on each floor. The first floor has tension braces and tie beams on arched braces, with only one remaining. It also retains square mortice holes for four mullioned 16th-century windows. The roof is a combination type, utilizing crown posts and queen posts, with rectangular-section crown posts supported by arched braces to the crown purlin, and square-section queen posts supported by arched braces from the tie beams, each with arched braces to the queen purlins.
