Description

31 and 33 Castle Street is a house that was originally three separate homes built around 1590. In the 19th century, it was converted into two houses, and in the late 20th century, it was transformed into a single residence. The building features a plastered and colourwashed timber frame sitting on a brick base, topped with a thatched roof.

It has one storey and a dormer attic, with a four-window arrangement on the west side. The centre has two early 19th-century three-light casement windows, while there are one 20th-century casement window at each end. There are two plank doors on the left and one on the right, positioned between the windows. The gabled roof includes two gabled dormers fitted with 20th-century casements and finished with plain tiles below the sills. A central ridge stack is present, and the south gable wall is covered with a 19th-century brick skin.

Inside, the timber frame includes jowled principal posts, chamfered bridging beams, and a clasped purlin roof. Most tie beams, except those on the end trusses, have been cut to create an inserted passageway. The fireplaces were rebuilt in the late 20th century. There is a winder staircase on the north side and a second winder staircase near the stack. The north gable features an unglazed four-light diamond-mullioned window.
